Dan attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where he received a B.S. in Business Administration in 1981. He graduated in the top of his class in Air Force pilot training and went on to be a T-33 Instructor Pilot and C-141 Aircraft Commander. During his time in the Air Force, 1981-1988, Dan was a Distinguished Graduate (C-141 Aircraft Commander School), a maintenance test pilot, and squadron safety officer. Dan joined Northwest Airlines in 1988 and has held a wide variety of positions. He has wide body, narrow body, high tech "glass cockpit", steam gauge experience as well as international and domestic flying experience. Flying for Northwest Airlines has provided extensive experience in winter flight operations. Positions include: Captain A-320 and DC-9, First Officer DC-10, B-727, DC-9, Flight Engineer DC-10 and B-727. Captain Stratman's ratings include: Airline Transport Pilot, Commercial-airplane, Flight Engineer-turbojet powered. He has type ratings in the A-320, DC-9, and L-300. Dan also has time flying the Lockheed Constellation and the Martin 404. For 11 years Dan has been the Air Line Pilots Associations Airport Liaison Representative for the Kansas City International airport. Duties as an ALR include identifying airport deficiencies, working with airport management in resolving operational problems and participating in safety, planning and operational meetings held by airport staff. He is also a member of the Aviation Committee for the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. This committee is involved in shaping and guiding aviation issues in Kansas City that are important to the business community. Captain Stratman's general aviation qualifications include time in a multitude of single engine and multi-engine aircraft. He is also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Dr. John Owen brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise as the ALC medical consultant by being both a medical doctor and an experienced pilot. In private practice, Dr. Owen is board certified in Family Practice and Emergency Medicine. He actively practices family and aerospace medicine. Dr. Owen is a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) for the FAA and he performs all classes of medical flight examinations. John has participated for many years as a panel member for the EAA Aero Medical Council Forum at Oshkosh. Dr. Owen is a commercial, multiengine, instrument pilot who currently flies a King Air 200, Bonanza A-36 and a C-172. He is a current Certified Flight Instructor. Also, he is a FAA Safety Counselor. John’s background as a pilot gives him a tremendous advantage when dealing with complex areomedical issues. Dr. Owen is currently a Colonel (Brig. General approved) in the Air National Guard with over 30 years of military experience. He was the Flight Surgeon and Medical Squadron Commander for the 190th Air Refueling Wing in Topeka Kansas. John is also the State Air Surgeon for the Missouri Air National Guard. This depth of experience has led him to practice aerospace and emergency medicine in many international environments. John is very active in charitable organizations and serves on numerous boards. In his spare time, he volunteers as a leader for the Boy Scouts, flies as a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, and also flies patients for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. In 1981, Jim left the FAA and, in 1982, began a career with the Department of Defense as an aeronautical analyst. His primary duties included international instrument charting and airfield evaluation for the Defense Department and Drug Enforcement Agency. In 1989, Jim desired to return to air traffic control. He left the DOD and further expanded his ATC resume internationally by joining the Canadian aviation community as a terminal radar approach controller at Toronto Area Control Centre. Following more than six years in Toronto, Jim returned to the U.S. to perform ATC duties in Miami, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and finally Kansas City where he recently retired from ATC. He is now using his impressive experience as an instructor at the FAA Academy Radar Training Facility where he will be teaching new ATC students in the radar simulator. In addition to his extensive ATC history, Jim is also a commercial/multi-engine/instrument pilot. He regularly flies his own aircraft and has been trained and certified by Cirrus in the SR22 in which he has accumulated several hundred of flight hours. Dr. Philip Bos is the General Aviation, aircraft maintenance consultant for Aviation Litigation Consulting. He has over 30 years and over 3,000 hours in general aviation aircraft from light tail draggers to corporate jets. Dr. Bos is a FAA certified airframe and power plant mechanic with an inspection authorization rating. His maintenance experience extends from the small fabric covered aircraft to corporate jets as well as the Boeing 737. In 1975 he graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics with an A&P license. He worked in the general aviation sector servicing Cessna Citations and other business aircraft. In 1978 he obtained his commercial license with instrument and multi-engine ratings. In 1981 Phil obtained his inspection authorization and in 1983 he started his own fixed base operation which later emphasized operation of the Cessna 300 and 400 series aircraft. Owning the FBO led to managing an airport. He did this while he was maintaining aircraft, providing pilots for hire and managing a flight school. In 2000 Dr. Bos obtained his Bachelors degree and in 2001 he obtained his Masters in Aviation Safety from the University of Central Missouri. In 2006 he was awarded his Doctorate in Business, Organization and Management from Capella University in Minnesota. Phil is currently an assistant professor at the University of Central Missouri, in the Aviation Department. Among other subjects, he teaches the FAR Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician Program. Dr. Bos’ education has provided the knowledge while his industry experience has provided groundwork for proficiency on general aviation matters. Resume accident investigation consultant:
Fred Schieszer, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Aviation at the University of Central Missouri has spent most of his adult life in the field of aviation. After graduation from high school he worked at a small general aviation airport doing aircraft maintenance, line service, airport maintenance, and providing secure storage for aircraft which were held by insurance companies pending litigation or disposal. During this time he became interested in what caused the planes to crash. As a pilot, this was a natural extension of his undergraduate college studies in Psychology where he specialized in ergonomics, aircrew mission and task organization. After graduation from College Fred served in the United States Coast Guard as Aircrew on HU-16, HC-130, and HH52 Aircraft. He received training in Aircraft Accident Investigation and participated in many field investigations serving on the aircraft accident board and making recommendations for corrective procedures and actions. After active duty military service was completed, he began graduate school towards an advanced degree. While a graduate student he continued his work in air safety investigation. Upon graduation, with a Masters degree, Fred was hired in the aviation department at Central Missouri State University to teach Aerodynamics, Aircraft Systems, Transport Aircraft Systems, Weight and Balance, Non Destructive Testing, Aeronautics, and Aircraft Accident Investigation. While a teacher at Central Missouri State University he rose through the ranks of Professor while continuing his work as an Air Safety Investigator, Safety Consultant, and Expert Witness in aviation litigation. The Department of Aviation encourages his extra curricular consulting as a way of keeping abreast of current trends and best practices in the ever changing field of aviation safety. Upon retirement from full time teaching Fred has conducted many investigations and participated in accident investigation boards for private organizations. Professor Schieszer continues to conduct Seminar courses in Air Safety Investigator training twice a year and participates in the General Aviation Air Safety Investigators (GAASI) advanced technical workshop on an annual basis. At a recent poll taken at the GAASI conference it was discovered that nearly 20% of the attendance at the conference were alumni of the Aircraft Accident Investigation class at CMSU. Resume |
